November 17, 1973, student uprising commemorated with usual clashes (photos + videos)

Dozens of thousands of people around Greece marched peacefully to commemorate the event, however there were also clashes

Over 25,000 Greeks marched for the 41st anniversary of the Athens Polytechnic students uprising on November 17. The traditional march from the Athens Polytechnic to the U.S. Embassy on Monday was peaceful however there were 73 questionings with 10 arrests and 5 police were injured in independent clashes that took place at the region of Exarcheia. Hundreds of people set rubbish bins alight and threw rocks at police.

A female photographer and male journalist covering Monday’s clashes for VICE were injured at Exarcheia Square. Police are investigating the incident that resulted in their injury.

Minor clashes earlier on in the day had taken place between anarchist protestors and riot police squads guarding the demonstration at Vas. Sofias Avenue in downtown Athens. The police used tear gas and stun grenades to disperse the anarchists. Stun grenades were used at the Athens Tower with more clashes between the police and protestors.

In Patra, Peloponnese, marches were also held with a group of protestors wearing hoods and helmets throwing molotov cocktails at the Patras Court. Riot police threw chemicals at the protestors and there were four arrests.

In Thessaloniki, Macedonia, young people coming out of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki threw objects at the gate of the International Trade Fair of Thessaloniki and there was an arrest and seven people were taken for questioning.
