Polytechnic 2024: Measures until Sunday 17/11 in Athens – All traffic regulations

The center of Athens resembles a “fortress” due to the festive events for the “51st Anniversary of the Polytechnic Uprising”. Meanwhile, the police have implemented a series of traffic regulations starting Friday, November 15, 2024, and continuing until Monday, November 18, 2024, throughout the city center.

All traffic regulations – Which streets will be closed and when:

According to a statement from the Hellenic Police, emergency traffic regulations will be in effect until Monday, November 18, 2024, in the following road network of the broader Athens city center:

  • Ban on stopping and parking, as well as the disruption of vehicle traffic, will be gradually enforced depending on the traffic conditions, from 06:00 on Friday, November 15, 2024, to 06:00 on Monday, November 18, 2024, on the following streets:
  • Stournari (between Exarchia Square and 3rd September Street).
  • 28th October (Patission) (between Kodrigtonos and Eleftherios Venizelos Street and on both traffic directions, including its perpendiculars up to the first parallel street).
  • Tositsa Pedestrian Street.
  • Polytechnic Pedestrian Street.
  • Bouboulina Street (between Stournari Street and Alexandras Avenue).
  • George Street (between Stournari Street and Kapodistriou Street).
  • Botassi Street (between Stournari Street and Kapodistriou Street).
  • Kaningos Street (between Stournari Street and Chalkokondyli Street).
  • Solomou Street (between 3rd September Street and Exarchia Square).
  • Kapodistriou Street (between Botassi Street and 3rd September Street).
  • Exarchia Square.
  • Chalkokondyli Street (between 3rd September Street and Kaningos Square).
  • Averoff Street (between 28th October (Patission) and Marnis Street).
  • Veranzérou Street (between Kaningos Street and Marnis Street).
  • Spyrou Trikoupi Street (between Alexandras Avenue and Exarchia Square).
  • Solonos Street (between Hippocratus Street and Patousa Street).

Ban on stopping and parking, and gradual disruption of traffic on Sunday, November 17, 2024, starting at 06:00 AM with a gradual stop from 12:00 PM until the end of the events:

  • Eleftherios Venizelos Street (P. University), along its entire length and its perpendiculars up to the first parallel street.
  • Omonia Square.
  • Aiolou Street (between Eleftherios Venizelos (P. University) and Stadiou Streets).
  • Stadiou Street (along its entire length and perpendiculars to the first parallel street).
  • Syntagma Square.
  • V. Georgiou I Street, along its entire length.
  • Vasilissis Sofias Avenue (both traffic directions) and its perpendiculars to the first parallel street.
  • Academias Street, along its entire length and its perpendiculars to the first parallel street.
  • Alexandras Avenue, along its entire length and its perpendiculars to the first parallel street.
  • Gelonos Street (between Dorylaiou and P. Kokkali Streets).
  • P. Kokkali Street (between Gelonos Street and Vasilissis Sofias Avenue).
  • Dorylaiou Street (between P. Kyriakou Street and Vasilissis Sofias Avenue).
  • Vasilissis Amalias Avenue, along its entire length and perpendiculars to the first parallel street.
  • Filhellinon Street, along its entire length and perpendiculars to the first parallel street.
  • Syggrou Avenue (between Ath. Diakou and Vasilissis Amalias Avenue).
  • P. Tsaldari (Piraeus), between Iera Odos and Omonia Square.
  • Athinas Street, along its entire length.
  • Ermou Street (between Athinas and P. Tsaldari Streets).
  • Tsocha Street, along its entire length.
  • Soutsou Street (between Mavili Square and Tsocha Street).
  • Zaharofo Street (between Alexandras Avenue and Vasilissis Sofias).
  • Kifisias Avenue (between Katechaki and Alexandras avenues, towards Athens).
  • Mesogeion Avenue (between Katechaki Avenue and Pheidippidou Street, towards Athens).
  • Pheidippidou Street (between Mesogeion Avenue and Vasilissis Sofias Avenue).
  • Michalakopoulou Street (between Pheidippidou and Spyrou Merkouri Streets, both directions).
  • Vasilissis Konstantinou Avenue, along its entire length towards Kifisia.
  • Ardittou Street, along its entire length towards Vasilissis Konstantinou Avenue.
  • Vasilissis Alexandrou Street (between Vasilissis Sofias Avenue and Michalakopoulou Street).
  • Vendiri Street (between Vasilissis Sofias Avenue and Michalakopoulou Street).
  • Hatzigianni Mexi Street (between Vasilissis Sofias Avenue and Michalakopoulou Street).
  • Iridanou Street (between Vasilissis Sofias Avenue and Michalakopoulou Street).
  • Papadiamandopoulou Street (between Michalakopoulou and Vasilissis Sofias Avenue).
  • Aiginitou Street (between Vasilissis Sofias Avenue and Papadiamandopoulou Street).
  • Louri Street (between Vasilissis Sofias Avenue and Michalakopoulou Street).
  • Lampsakou Street (between Vasilissis Sofias Avenue and Michalakopoulou Street).
  • Semitelou Street (between Vasilissis Sofias Avenue and Michalakopoulou Street).
  • Kerasountos Street (between Vasilissis Sofias Avenue and Michalakopoulou Street).
  • Kartali Street (between Vasilissis Sofias Avenue and Evrou Street).
  • Lykaonias Street (between Vasilissis Sofias Avenue and Evrou Street).
  • Agg. Pyrri Street (between Vasilissis Sofias Avenue and Evrou Street).
  • Xenia Street (between Vasilissis Sofias Avenue and Michalakopoulou Street).

These traffic regulations will be enforced gradually and according to the traffic conditions.

Moreover, according to a decision from “Odos Symvionies SA”, there will be changes to the schedules and stops of public transport (Buses – Trolleybuses).

The Traffic Department of Attica has planned and will implement measures to facilitate traffic in the broader Athens city center area.

Drivers are advised to avoid driving and parking in areas where the events and marches will take place, around the U.S. Embassy, and in the broader city center area, until Sunday, November 17, 2024, for both their own convenience and to prevent additional traffic problems.

Measures for Polytechnic Anniversary – Athens “Fortress”

Increased police measures with 5,000 officers on the streets and ongoing drone and helicopter flights will be deployed by the Greek Police ahead of the Polytechnic anniversary celebrations.

Among the measures discussed during a meeting on Wednesday, November 13, 2024, at the General Police Directorate of Attica for the 51st anniversary of the Polytechnic Uprising, there will be enhanced surveillance from the Greek Police Operations Center for potential Israeli-related targets.

DIAS police officers will conduct continuous checks around the Polytechnic building. Meanwhile, DRASI police units will patrol the Exarchia area, and Traffic Police will implement the emergency and increased traffic measures, especially on Sunday.

Which metro stations will be closed on Sunday, November 17th:

Some metro stations in central Athens will be closed starting from 2 p.m. on Sunday, November 17, 2024, due to the Polytechnic Anniversary events.

According to information from STASY, following instructions from the police, the following metro stations will be closed at 2 p.m. on Sunday, November 17, 2024:
