If he is not…trolling, then he is probably determined to cause an uproar in the world of professional basketball. The subject is Enes Kanter, who announced tonight that he intends to declare participation in the 2027 WNBA Draft, since, as he maintains, the applicable eligibility regulations allow him to do so!

The Turkish former NBA center, “persona non grata” in his country due to his fierce criticisms of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, made known his decision through a post on social media, stating that he and his legal team examined in detail the regulatory framework of the WNBA.

According to what the 33-year-old ace maintains, from the examination of the eligibility criteria and the guidelines that, as he states, relate to self-identification and inclusion, it emerges that he can declare participation in the next draft, in April 2027.

After careful consideration and reviewing the current eligibility guidelines,
I’m officially declaring myself a @WNBA prospect.

If simply declaring who you are is all that’s required, then I meet every single requirement necessary to compete in the WNBA.

“After careful thought and after examining the applicable eligibility regulations, I officially declare myself a candidate for the WNBA,” he stated initially. Subsequently he maintained that “if all that is required is to declare who you are, then I fulfil every necessary condition to compete in the WNBA.”

Kanter Freedom acknowledged that his move is expected to provoke reactions, clarifying that, according to him, his aim is not to mock or to offend any community. “I know that my presence on the court will provoke intense reactions. I am not here to mock, to ridicule or to show disrespect towards any community or personal choice,” he noted.

At the same time, he requested that the rules he invokes be applied in the same way for everyone, maintaining that these are principles which players and coaches of the WNBA have publicly defended.

“I simply ask that the applicable rules be applied equally to all,” he stated, adding that he and his team are ready to pursue the application of the specific guidelines “with consistency and without exceptions.”

Closing his post, the former NBAer stated that he expects from the WNBA “to uphold the principles that it has proclaimed.”
