A diplomatic incident between Athens and Washington for the decision of Americans to refer to the FYROM with its so-called constitutional name in the text of the decision of the countries that make up the coalition against the Islamic State.

Following the incident and taking into account that the Americans ignored the efforts and calls of Greek diplomacy not to implement the announced challenge against the Greek positions and indicate the participating countries in the manner specified by the United Nations, by their official names, the Greek Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs decided not to take part in the meeting of the countries that make up the international coalition against the Islamic State, despite the fact that he had traveled to Brussels just to participate in the meeting.

According to an official statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs “Mr. Venizelos decided  not to  participate in the meeting  due to the fact that, despite the frequent contact with the United States, they did not respect the rules and the practice of the UN, as to how to announce the names of the participating countries.
