A photographer for the French News Agency who was wounded in Lebanon, Christina Asi, French rape victim Giselle Pelico and American actress Sharon Stone are among the 100 women of the year, according to the BBC’s rankings released today.
The ranking, which is divided into five categories climate, culture and education, entertainment and sports, politics, science health and technology- seeks to highlight women who, “thanks to their resilience, are driving change,” the British media outlet said.
Photographer Christina Assi, who had her right leg amputated after an Israeli strike in October 2023 while reporting in Lebanon, was honored in the “politics” category.
“That experience led her to campaign for journalist safety while dedicating her participation in the Paris 2024 Olympic flame relay to all the journalists who died in the line of duty,” the BBC writes. Being chosen “is an incredible honour, especially as a woman photographer in a field often dominated by men,” Christina Assi reacted, speaking to Agence France-Presse.
The award “is a tribute to all the courageous journalists who were targeted just for doing their job,” she added. She also said she hoped “that this recognition will highlight the importance of press freedom and the sacrifices that have been made to achieve it.”
France’s Giselle Pelico was also honored in the same category.
This woman became the emblem of rape victims around the world. Drugged by her husband and raped in her sleep for ten years by him and dozens of men whom he invited, she found herself this fall at the center of an unusual trial with international appeal.
According to the BBC, “By giving up her right to anonymity and allowing her story to be broadcast around the world, Giselle Pelico became a symbol of courage and resilience.”
In the UK, Labour’s deputy leader Angela Rainer and opposition leader Kemi Badenoch also excelled in this category.
Honoured to be included in this year’s BBC 100 Women list – celebrating resilience.

In culture, the unforgettable “Basic Instinct” star Sharon Stone was distinguished for her entire career. The list also includes British singer Raye, music revelation of the year 2023.
In sports, Brazilian gymnast Rebeca Andrade (holder of six Olympic medals, two of them gold) is singled out for “overcoming many serious injuries.”
