Newsroom December 18 11:00

At 2:59 a.m. (Italian time) on Wednesday morning, the rescue of caver Ottavia Piana, who had fallen from a height of 6 meters while inside the Abiso Bueno Fonteno cave, near Bergamo, at a depth of about 580 meters, was completed.

The 32-year-old woman suffered a series of fractures and was taken immediately to hospital. According to doctors, her life is not in danger.

The rescue operation, which lasted three days, involved more than 120 doctors, nurses, technicians, and rescuers, who worked non-stop.

“Near the exit of the cave cold air was blowing, Ottavia was tired and that’s why we tried to make it as fast as possible,” said one of the rescuers. Inside the cave, the maximum temperature is 8 degrees Celsius.

The Italian caver, who was injured inside the same cave a year ago, promised not to take part in high-risk expeditions in the future.
