Prime Minister Antonis Samaras will chair a meeting of the New Democracy parliamentary group this afternoon at 13:30, during which he will explain to his party’s MPs the reasons that led him to call a snap presidential election.
According to information, the Prime Minister will also ask ND MPs to support his choice of Mr. Stavros Dimas as a candidate for the position of the President of the Republic. Moreover, he will confirm that Mr. Dimas will be a candidate in all three rounds of voting, as he did yesterday in his address at an event organised by the Hellenic Conferederation of Commerce and Entrepreneurship (ESEE).
More specifically, Mr. Samaras said yesterday that lies are being told, including accusations of attempted bribery of MPs to vote for a president but he stressed that “ideological terrorism will not succeed.”
Today, Mr. Samaras will once again attack SYRIZA for causing instability and creating uncertainty abroad, which affected the attitude of lenders in negotiations with the Troika.
The prime minister is also expected to reiterate the message that the government succeeded in its target to exit the bailout program earlier than anticipated and that “Greece is standing on its own feet” despite some people’s effort to cancel that.
“What’s at stake in these elections is normality and growth,” the prime minister said yesterday in his speech, expressing his certainty that democratic responsibility will prevail.
