All schools will normally open on Wednesday 9 January after a 15-day break for the Christmas and New Year’s holidays, despite a four-day national mourning declared by the government for the death of former Prime Minister Costas Simitis, whose funeral will be held Thursday at public expense.

During the national mourning, flags are flown at half-mast in honour of the deceased, while in some cases the closure of public services and schools has been decided.

Normal schools and services

Under the current legal framework in Greece, in order to close schools and services, there must be ministerial decisions to do so. However, no ministerial decision has been issued, which decides the closure of educational institutions and public services.

So schools will be open as scheduled from Wednesday, January 8.

Public services will also be open from today since yesterday was the Epiphany holiday.
