Meloni: With Mitsotakis, we sit side by side at European Councils and take a leading role in various formats

In February, the intergovernmental conference between Italy and Greece will take place, as announced by the prime minister of the neighboring country – "We share a common approach on many issues with Mitsotakis," said Meloni

Giorgia Meloni, reflecting on the political developments of the past year in Italy, spoke about the challenges of 2025 during a press conference held on Thursday.

During the interview, responding to a question from ERT, the Italian prime minister referred to Greece and her relationship with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

More specifically, the head of the Italian government emphasized:
“The relations between Italy and Greece are excellent, as expected between two countries that share a geostrategic identity and belong to both the European Union and the Atlantic Alliance. Kyriakos Mitsotakis and I sit side by side at the European Councils and take a leading role in various ‘formats,’ such as MED9, MED5, and, of course, the European summits. The North-South Summit, which took place before Christmas in Finland, I believe, is one of the most interesting innovations of recent months.”

“As I pointed out during the press conference that concluded the Summit, a few years ago, the so-called ‘frugal countries’ and those that some viewed as ‘not exactly serious’ could meet to discuss the major issues of European security. This means that many things are changing now. I believe that the work Greece and Italy have done in recent years has contributed to this change. Yes, Kyriakos Mitsotakis and I discuss many issues where we share a common approach. These include security, defense, and migration, which concern us as few other countries in Europe are affected. But we also discuss issues such as environmental protection and management projects at a time when we are facing extreme climatic phenomena,” continued the Italian prime minister.

“Soon, we will not just have an ordinary meeting, but an intergovernmental conference will be organized. The last one took place in Corfu, I think in 2017. The next one will be held in Rome, if I remember correctly, on February 9 (note: Italian diplomatic sources have mentioned February 19, not the 9th), and our goal is to formalize, with new agreements, the breadth of our cooperation. This will include a joint declaration that will trace the thread of all our cooperation and some bilateral agreements on issues of particular importance. These will likely include the sectors of security and Civil Protection,” Meloni stated.
