Greek tourism 2024: Greece ranks 5th in Europe with over 152 million overnight stays

Spain, France, Italy and Germany lead the way - In Greece, 84% of all overnight stays are made by foreign visitors and more than three quarters by hotels

Newsroom January 20 11:16

Greece‘s tourism is in 5th place for 2024 based on the number of overnight stays for the previous year, which are estimated at over 152.3 million in our country, recording an increase of 3.5% compared to 2023.

These are overnight stays made in all types of accommodation – hotels, short-term rentals and camping – with the duo of Greece and Spain in particular having performed particularly well across Europe and during the “hot” third quarter for tourism in Europe.

Figures based on initial calculations from the European Statistics Authority for 2024 suggest a total of overnight stays last year across Europe of close to 3 billion – 2.989 billion to be precise – with Spain leading the way with more than half a billion overnight stays (501 million) last year.

France and Italy follow with 450 million and 448 million respectively, followed by Germany with 441 million for the whole year, always based on Eurostat estimates.

The figures for Greece, which is in 5th place, refer, as mentioned above, to 152.33 million overnight stays (from 147.2 million in 2023), of which the vast majority, 84%, are those of international visitors to the country, just below the 128 million, while the remaining 24.6 million are for domestic tourism.
