Prime Minister Antonis Samaras wraps up his election campaign with a speech at Syntagma square in Athens at 19.00 and it is expected to lash out at the main opposition party, SYRIZA.
The rally is considered to be a risky move as this period is not suitable for large rallies. The decision for this rally was taken on Wednesday afternoon after several days of thinking. The aim is to demonstrate the confidence and the power of the prime minister who was criticized for performing a protected campaign avoiding citizens and journalists. Mr. Samaras wants to convey an optimistic attitude and mobilize his voters these last hours before the elections. The government’s staff is concerned about the abstention and the protest vote which under these circumstances can favor the opposition parties. The data available to New Democracy do not show a clear scenery.
In this context Mr Samaras unleashed a fierce personal attack to Mr Tsipras, the leader of SYRIZA, yesterday and it is expected to continue this way. The Prime Minister has called Mr Tsipras “the accident that should not happen to the country,”. Mr. Samaras avoided to pose the crucial dilemma of elections. He will address to the citizens who do not want to put their country at risk leading to a national disaster.
He will repeat that after two years of great efforts and sacrifices made by Greek people, he managed to prevent the exit from the eurozone, to restore its credibility and create conditions for growth and final exit from the crisis.
For Prime Minister what’s at stake for the government is to avoid “political anomaly that will lead the country to elections and will cause national troubles”. The government team says, however, that on Sunday there will be two maps of Greece, one of the local and regional elections, where New Democracy will prevail, and one of the European elections, where all options are open. They note, though, that the final conclusion regarding the citizens’ message will be drawn combining both results.
