Tomorrow’s elections have a referendum character, as the opposition claims and the government has partially accepted, and they will determine the political course of Greece.
The result of the elections will show if the current government continues ruling smoothly or voters question strongly the current policy
According to opinion polls published in recent days SYRIZA leads steadily, with about a 3% difference.
There are various scenarios concerning the election results.
– If New Democracy wins, there will be no issue posed and the government will continue its policy.
– If the difference in elections is up to three points in favor of SYRIZA and given that in local elections New Democracy led over SYRIZA, the government will attempt to understate the fact using the well known tactic “got the message and will do whatever we can to improve ourselves,”.
– If the difference is three to five points , things will become difficult for the government, but not insurmountable. It will however need to act quickly and maybe proceed to new alliances and partnerships in the Parliament.
– If the difference is more than five points – especially in conjuction with the victories of Dourou and Sakellaridis – it is certain that the government will not be able to continue easily. In case SYRIZA surpasses the percentage of New democracy – PASOK, the rapid political developments will be inevitable.
New Democracy posed a clear dilemma of “stability or chaos ” for these elections and bets on some signs of recovery in some sectors of the economy and an international recognition of the efforts made have paid off.
SYRIZA has lowered the bar of expectations during the recent days, while avoiding to talk about elections. It poses, though, hard dilemmas such as “continuing of this policy or topple of government” and warns that if the government is not denounced, new memorandum will be imposed.
The outcome of the battle will be determined on whether the wave of discontent that exists in Greek society for a long time, will be expressed with a vote in favor of SYRIZA .
