Prime Minister Antonis Samaras wrapped up his election campaign unleashing a fierce attack to the main opposition party, SYRIZA, and referring to the dilemma of elections at the rally that took place at Syntagma square yesterday.
Mr Samaras avoided to pose the issue of national elections but he said clearly that if SYRIZA prevails, elections will result by themselves and therefore he asked citizens to prevent this from happening.
For the Prime Minister the basic dilemma is “stability or chaos”. He also said that “Tsipras asked Greek people , once again , the vote of our people , to topple the government and trigger early elections . Do you want early elections, instability and uncertainty? It’s up to you to decide! I posed clearly all the dilemma of elections on Sunday: All dilemmas: will the country go ahead? Or will we return to the crisis and disaster? Will we stay in constant progress ? Or will you let some people trigger early elections and send us back to chaos?”.
Antonis Samaras referred to the developments of the past two years claiming that “we prevented Greek eurozone exit, have restored the credibility and stabilization of the country, achieved a primary surplus,”. The next steps are the debt sustainability which will be decided during the fall, the creation of 550,000 jobs by 2018, GDP growth and the tax cuts given that fiscal stability permits it.
Samaras acknowledged that people suffered and are still suffering and promised to restore injustices in taxation, implying changes in this area.
The rally that took place at Syntagma square was a demonstration of confidence of Prime Minister and an emotional call for the party supportes. Mr Samaras addressed to people by saying “stand next to me, together with me,”.
The government staff believes that all options are open: from SYRIZA prevailing with great difference to New Democracy wining the elections.
They believe that the game will be determined on abstention and relaxed attitude of the voters, two possibilities that Prime Minister tried to avoid with his last appearances asking people to vote on Sunday. The government team , however, insists that on Sunday night there will be two polls and the political conclusion that will arise will be a combination of European elections and local elections.
