Giorgios Masouras: From Kehrenia, Aetolia-Acarnania, to Bochum’s “hero”

In recent days, one name has been on the lips of the entire German football community: George Masouras. The Greek attacking midfielder is indeed exceptional, but not only because of his athletic performances

Newsroom February 19 05:58

Giorgios Masouras is one of those Greek footballers who doesn’t need much introduction. On the contrary, he had already garnered attention long before his transfer to Olympiacos and becoming a key member of the Greek National Team, as well as before scoring two goals against Dortmund — which made him a chant among Bochum fans and the main subject of German sports media.

However, it’s not just these achievements that make Giorgios Masouras stand out. It’s his life story — how a child from the countryside managed to write history in Greece and beyond, a fairytale that every football fan loves and few are fortunate enough to experience.

From Kehrenia Aetolia-Acarnania to Super League Stardom

Masouras was born and raised in Kehrenia, Aetolia-Acarnania, where he took his first football steps with the local club Omónia. Coming from a family of livestock farmers and farmers, Masouras balanced school, football, and helping his family with fieldwork to support his family’s livelihood, alongside his three sisters.

At the age of 16, he left for Athens, and after finishing school, he enrolled in Pedagogical studies. At the same time, he joined the youth academies of Apollon Smyrnis, albeit unofficially, as he hesitated to tell his parents — who wanted him to focus on his studies — that he was still playing football daily.

However, destiny had other plans: the young player’s talent impressed the people of Iliysiakos, who decided to acquire the 18-year-old winger. This decision paid off, as Masouras played a pivotal role in securing the team’s promotion to the Third National Division.

In 2014, he took another leap, signing with Panionios. In 4.5 years, he made 150 appearances, scoring 29 goals, and in 2018, he rightfully earned his first call-up to the Greek National Team, becoming a key player ever since. In this way, Masouras — a boy from the provinces who moved to the capital to take control of his life — found himself, before even reaching adulthood, in the elite of the Greek Super League.

The Transfer to Olympiacos and the Fulfillment of Another Dream

His tactical discipline, passion, and athleticism convinced Olympiacos to secure his transfer. This allowed Masouras, who had supported the Red and Whites since childhood, to fulfill yet another dream.

Masouras truly made history in Piraeus: from 2019 to 2025, he accumulated 279 appearances (9th in the club’s history), scoring 57 goals and providing 32 assists. During this period, he was named the best Greek player in the Super League for two seasons, won 3 league titles, 1 cup, and played a major role in two of the club’s biggest European successes: the historic qualification against Arsenal in the 2019/20 season and, of course, the Conference League triumph in 2024.

Bochum Dances the Syrtaki

Just a few days ago, Olympiacos and Bochum agreed on a loan deal for Masouras. In just 24 hours, the Greek international had already earned a special place in the hearts of the “Blues.”

In his second Bundesliga appearance for Bochum, Masouras scored two goals within two minutes against Borussia Dortmund in the mini-derby of the Ruhr Valley. The first goal came by tapping the ball into the net after a shot from Filip Hoffman, and the second came when he smartly intercepted the ball from Dortmund’s defense and calmly slotted it past the goalkeeper. But what was most important for Masouras? He later admitted he had to “apologize a thousand times” to Hoffman for “stealing” his goal, as revealed by his teammate in an interview after the match.

Thanks to his magical performance, Masouras helped secure Bochum’s first win in a month, lifting them from the relegation zone for the first time since September!

At the end of the match, the entire stadium cheered for him: the speakers at the Vonovia Ruhrstadion began playing “Zorba’s Dance,” and both players and fans literally partied in his honor.

This was, of course, the second time the song had been played at Bochum’s stadium — the first being 18 years ago, when the “Blues” had danced for Fanis Gekas, the great Greek goal-scorer, who had also scored two goals against Dortmund.

A Role Model for Others

In an era when the romanticism of fans is being tested, when much in the sport is driven by money, and when the social aspect of football news is often dominated by unpleasant events, stories like that of Giorgios Masouras provide inspiration. They show how a person, with patience, persistence, and hard work, can achieve their dreams and how football and sport, in general, can not only offer an escape but also brighten our lives.

Masouras may not be the best Greek footballer in history, nor does he break records one after another, but wherever he plays, he is adored for his character, hard work, and passion, becoming a role model for others. And that matters more than any goal or expensive contract.
