The proposal, credited to Uruguayan Football Federation president Ignacio Alonso, was discussed in recent meetings with FIFA president Gianni Infantino and other top officials.
The 2030 World Cup will mark the 100th anniversary of the tournament, first held in Uruguay in 1930. To celebrate this milestone, FIFA has already awarded hosting rights to Spain, Portugal, and Morocco, while Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay will host select opening-round matches.
Infantino reportedly described the expansion idea as “interesting”, stating that it requires further analysis. The final decision will likely depend on financial feasibility and logistical considerations, as FIFA gauges global reaction to the potential change.
