Horror in Exarchia: Woman lived for 20 days with dead mother and dozens of cats

A shocking case has come to light in Exarchia, where a 66-year-old woman was found living for nearly three weeks with the corpse of her mother and dozens of cats in a squalid apartment

Newsroom March 11 04:45

The grim discovery was made on Saturday, March 8, after a concerned citizen alerted authorities about a possible death in a third-floor apartment. Upon arrival, police were met by the elderly woman’s daughter, who calmly admitted that her mother had been dead for at least 20 days. Unable to part with her, she had wrapped the body in sheets and plastic bags and placed it in the bedroom.

Inside, officers found the heavily decomposed body, covered in fabric and garbage bags. The apartment was in a state of extreme neglect, filled with waste, filth, and an overwhelming stench.

No Signs of Foul Play, but Serious Neglect

A forensic team was called to examine the scene, but no immediate evidence of criminal activity was found. However, authorities noted that the 66-year-old woman displayed signs of severe mental distress and required psychiatric evaluation.

The woman had a history of animal hoarding. Reports indicate that she had previously been accused of neglecting more than 40 cats in a rented property in Kineta, while several malnourished and suffering felines were also found in her Exarchia home.

“She Kept Cats as Trophies”

Anthoula Anasoglou, a lawyer representing the Panhellenic Animal Abuse Prevention Union, expressed deep concern over the case.

“It becomes increasingly clear that those who abuse animals are often capable of harming humans as well,” she stated.

According to Anasoglou, the woman kept cats confined in cages, surrounded by their own waste. The same level of neglect appeared to have extended to her elderly mother, who allegedly received no medical attention.

“How did this woman die?” she questioned. “Was she left to perish due to her daughter’s neglect? Could she have been saved if she had received proper care?”

The woman has now been placed under psychiatric observation. Authorities and animal welfare groups are urging the public to be more vigilant in recognizing signs of abuse and neglect before tragedies like this unfold.
