As one enters the offices of Charlie Hebdo faces a hallway with papers painted in blood as a reminder of the horrific crime that cost the lives of 12 people while a further 10 were injured on Wednesday.
The French newspaper Le Monde describes in detail the moments before the execution.
“As every Wednesday, everyone was present for the usual rite meeting around the oval table. Charb, the structure director was sitting on the left as always. Next to him were the cartoonists Cabu, Wolinski, Tignous, Honoré and Riss, the authors Laurent Léger, Fabrice Nicolino and Philippe Lançon, the financial journalist Bernard Maris and the columnists Sigolène Vinson and Elsa Cayat.
Normally the meetings will start at 10:30 in the morning but will go on and on amid the “dirty” jokes. Permanent disagreement: the coffee machine that never worked. On the walls pinned some of the iconic magazine designs. Among them what caused the arson attack in 2011.
Around lunch time, the meeting will be over and the usual suspects would dine at bistro Our Gang in rue Amelot. Only Wednesday, January the 7th nobody was present.
Half an hour in the meeting that never ended, the two masked men entered the room and scattered silence. They were armed with guns. One of them asked: Charb? and then shot him. Then shouted the other names and shot them in cold blood. When they approached Sigolène Vinson and placed the gun to her head they said to her: “We will not kill you, we don’t kill women”, but asked her to read Koran.
