Panathinaikos takes the lead in the race for qualification

Panathinaikos delivered a statement performance against Fiorentina, securing a thrilling 3-2 victory at OAKA and heading to the second leg in Florence with a crucial advantage

Newsroom March 12 10:30

The Greens showed character, and now Greece has a solid chance of reaching the quarterfinals of a European competition for the first time in over two decades!

Strong Start, But a Costly Blackout

Rui Vitória’s decision to start Świderski over Ioannidis proved to be a masterstroke. The Polish striker opened the scoring with a brilliant finish in the 5th minute and then set up Maksimović for the second goal in the 19th. At 2-0, everything seemed to be going perfectly, but a disastrous five-minute stretch saw Fiorentina strike twice (20’, 23’) and turn the game into a dogfight.

A Different Panathinaikos in the Second Half

Coming out of the break, Panathinaikos looked like a team on a mission. Between the 45th and 60th minute, they dominated and found the all-important third goal through Tete after a great assist from Djuricic. Fiorentina struggled to respond, managing only three attempts in the second half, while Panathinaikos even hit the post in the dying moments, missing the chance to widen their lead.

Everything on the Line in Florence

The 3-2 win gives Panathinaikos the upper hand, but nothing is decided yet. The decisive second leg on Thursday, March 13, at the Artemio Franchi will be a battle. The Greens have already shown they can exploit Fiorentina’s shaky defense, but they’ll need focus and intensity until the final whistle.

And if they go through? A likely quarterfinal clash against either Celje or Lugano makes a semifinal run look like a realistic dream!

The answer will come in Florence. Panathinaikos has a golden opportunity to make history.
