Bartzokas ahead of Olympiacos vs. Panathinaikos: “When we play as a team, we’re unstoppable”

With the highly anticipated Olympiacos-Panathinaikos showdown set for Friday at the SEF, head coach Giorgos Bartzokas and Evan Fournier shared their thoughts ahead of this crucial EuroLeague matchup

Newsroom March 13 07:30

Bartzokas: “Every Game Is Different”

Speaking at Media Day ahead of the 29th round of the EuroLeague, Bartzokas emphasized the unique nature of these matchups, the importance of fan support, and the differences compared to their Greek Cup clash.

“This is our sixth meeting this season, and every time, it’s a different game. It depends on the opponents’ form, the momentum, motivation, and health of the teams. I expect a tough battle—Panathinaikos is in great shape and a very talented team, as their standings show. We need patience and discipline, no heroics—just sticking to our plan,” he said.

When asked if familiarity between the two teams simplifies tactical preparation, he noted:
“Watching film makes it easier since we’ve played multiple times, so we focus more on correcting past mistakes than deep analysis. But it’s the same for them. What gives us an edge is our home court—the environment won’t be pleasant for them. We’re motivated, and we’re aiming for the best possible EuroLeague finish.”

More Options, Fewer Mistakes

Bartzokas reflected on previous encounters, pointing out that in the Greek Cup game, Olympiacos controlled most of the match but lost due to late mistakes.

“We had only one true guard available back then—Goss played over 30 minutes. Now, we have more options with Vildoza and Lee, which gives us more ball-handlers and helps distribute responsibilities better,” he explained.

Regarding the team’s mindset during their 10-1 second-round run, Bartzokas stressed that winning keeps everyone focused:
“The players understand the importance of these games. There’s a lot of pressure from the start of the season, and I don’t agree with people assuming we’ll be in Abu Dhabi. It’s a tough process, and every game is a challenge. But the fans’ passion and support fuel us even more.”

“No Special Tactics—Just Win”

When asked about his biggest coaching challenge in this game, Bartzokas kept it simple:
“I don’t have any special challenges—I just want to win. My only job is to convince the players that if we play together—on offense and defense—we’re unstoppable. That’s what I truly believe.”

Fournier: “Time to Prepare for Battle”

Evan Fournier echoed his coach’s sentiment, highlighting the significance of the rivalry.

“This is a big game for us, for the fans, for everyone. We have to be ready to fight and win,” he said.

Although the game doesn’t have major playoff implications, Fournier emphasized its importance:
“The next game is always the most important one, and right now, that’s Panathinaikos. We’re not thinking ahead—just focusing on the battle in front of us.”

On the psychological aspect of the rivalry, Fournier added:
“It depends on how each player approaches competition. I was raised to dislike my opponents. There’s no personal animosity, but when you’re on the court, you can’t be friends—you just want to win.”
