April 9 strike: What applies to metro, buses, trolleys – Ships to remain docked

Full details on who is participating in Wednesday's (April 9) strike

Newsroom April 7 04:48

The country is expected to come to a standstill on Wednesday, April 9, as Greece’s main labor unions, GSEE and ADEDY, have declared a nationwide 24-hour strike.

Protest actions have already been announced in public transportation sectors, including buses, ships, and airports.

The unions and workers’ associations from both the private and public sectors are mobilizing with demands for the reinstatement of the 13th and 14th salaries in the public sector, additional measures to tackle inflation and the housing crisis, and wage increases.

Demonstrations in Athens are scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m.

Bus and Trolley Service Announcements

Bus and trolley workers will participate in the 24-hour strike announced by GSEE on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, by holding work stoppages.

According to announcements from the OASA Workers’ Union and the ILPAP Workers’ Union, buses and trolleys are expected to operate only between 9:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m., due to work stoppages at the beginning and end of their shifts (from the start of the shift until 9:00 a.m. and from 9:00 p.m. until the end of the shift).

The workers’ demands include:

  • Renewal of the vehicle fleet
  • Recruitment of new personnel
  • Recognition of prior service for newly hired employees
  • Wage increases
  • Public, safe, modern, and reliable transport that meets the needs of both workers and passengers

Buses on the OASA routes operated by KTEL companies are expected to run normally throughout the day.

As of now, no announcements have been made regarding Tram, Metro, or ISAP (electric railway) services.

Ships to Remain Docked – What to Expect for Flights

Ferries will remain docked on Wednesday, April 9, as the Panhellenic Seamen’s Federation is participating in the strike.

According to the union’s announcement, the strike applies to all categories of vessels, starting at 00:01 a.m. and ending at midnight (24:00). Their main demands include tackling inflation, addressing the housing crisis, and ensuring collective bargaining rights.

Air traffic controllers will also join the strike. According to a statement from the Greek Air Traffic Controllers’ Union (EEEKE), only a limited number of flights will be operated during the strike to meet essential public needs. These include humanitarian aid flights, emergency medical flights, and others deemed necessary.

Further announcements will be issued regarding which flights will operate and which will be affected.

The air traffic controllers’ strike will also last from 00:01 to 24:00.
