A candlelight rally was held outside the Acropolis Museum on January 18 in support of the Parthenon Marbles reunification, i.e. their return to Greece from the British Museum.

Despite the rainy weather, hundreds of citizens gathered outside the impressive museum’s entrance, holding lighted candles in order to send a clear message to the British, that the Parthenon Marbles are a part of the Greek soul and should return home.

The event was organized by the Central Union of Municipalities of Greece (KEDE) as part of its campaign for the return of the Parthenon Sculptures.

According to KEDE head George Patoulis, the lighted candles were a symbol of “peace, culture and the solidarity of the people.” Marathonas mayor Ilias Psinakis, who is leading the specific campaign, said that KEDE wanted to organize the event ahead of Monday, when the sculpture that had been lent by the British Museum to the Hermitage Museum in St. Peterburg, Russia, is due to return to London.
