Details from the huge case file compiled by the Greek Police as the result of a probe into a huge extortion ring operating out of Korydallos prison indicate that the alleged members of the extortion racket had absolute freedom of movement inside the jail.
More specifically, jailed felon Panagiotis Vlastos, who allegedly run the crime syndicate along with two other convicts, namely Giannis Skaftouros and Vassilis Stefanakos, was able to order the murder of his own cousin from behind bars.
According the recordings from the phone calls he made from prison, the leader of the criminal organization that is said to be the biggest known to have operated in Greece, put out a murder contract for his 45-year-old cousin Evangelia Vlastou, whom was accusing of withholding money that belonged to him.
Evangelia, a former member of Vlastos’ gang, who collected the money from the ring’s extortions and also participated in many bomb attacks by procuring and preparing the explosives, decided to turn informant when she realized that her cousin wanted her dead.
The unscrupulous ringleader used to threaten her every time she went to visit in prison, Evangelia told authorities. Moreover, Vlastos is allegedly heard ordering her assassination in the recordings of his telephone conversations.
In fact, the notorious criminal wanted to have a say in the method of his cousin’s assassination, asking his friends to use a more reliable way than a bomb attack.
Evangelia, who is currently under police protection, has also helped the police thwart another assassination plot against Court of Appeals President Paraskevi Kalatzi, by providing them information.
