Woman filed for divorce because… ChatGPT told her that her husband was cheating on her

A woman filed for divorce in Greece after claiming that ChatGPT, acting as a fortune teller, "read her coffee grounds" and revealed her husband was cheating—with another woman who supposedly wants to "break up their home."

This is reportedly the first divorce case in Greece triggered by a response from artificial intelligence, specifically ChatGPT.

The woman, who has been married for 12 years and has two young children with her husband, used ChatGPT as part of a viral trend. She asked the AI to “read her Greek coffee” by analyzing a photo of the leftover grounds. According to her, the AI responded with a shocking revelation: her husband was allegedly having an affair with a younger woman.

Armed with the AI’s “reading,” the woman kicked her husband out and filed for divorce—leaving him stunned and confused.

The husband told ANT1 news:

“My wife often follows random trends. A few months ago, as part of some viral challenge, she made two cups of Greek coffee and said, ‘let’s have fun with this’—after drinking them, she photographed the cups and asked ChatGPT to read them. I went along with it just to humor her.

According to the reading of my cup, it mentioned a young woman with the initial E, whom I supposedly think about intensely, and that I apparently desire a relationship with her. In hers, the AI claimed I was cheating with someone who wanted to ruin our home. I laughed it off, thinking it was harmless fun.

She, on the other hand, took it very seriously. She believed the AI completely—especially since it matched her own ‘reading.’ She kicked me out and told our kids we’re getting a divorce.

I left, hoping she’d calm down, but my worst fears were confirmed when a lawyer called me with her request for a mutual divorce. When I refused, I was served with official divorce papers three days later.”

He added that she had gone through something similar in the past, when an astrologer convinced her of unfounded claims, and it took her a year to realize none of it was real.

What the Husband’s Lawyer Says

The husband’s lawyer, Phoivos Stroungaris, told ANT1:

“My client is innocent until proven otherwise. The absurdity of AI cannot be used as evidence in a courtroom. Something deeper is going on here.

Perhaps she wanted to believe he was cheating, but couldn’t prove it—so she used ChatGPT as confirmation. What’s concerning is that someone actually used AI as ‘evidence.’

He never wanted a divorce—he thought it was all a silly joke. Now, I’m advising him to file for custody of their two children. I can’t believe someone raising children would base life-altering decisions on what an AI told them.”
