The 32-year-old mother of two children—who were found with cigarette burn marks—will be taken to Korydallos Prison after taking them to the General Hospital of Larissa last Saturday, when one of the children presented respiratory issues.
During her lengthy testimony before the Larissa examining magistrate, the accused stuck to her original claim that the biological father of the children inflicted the cigarette burns on both her and their 5-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter.
Yesterday, Wednesday, the mother’s 50-year-old boyfriend—against whom an arrest warrant had been issued—also turned himself in. Following a child psychiatrist’s assessment, incriminating evidence emerged against him. According to sources, the two minors identified him as the person who caused the cigarette burns all over their bodies.
Doctor’s Testimony
As reported by protothema.gr yesterday, the doctor recounted conversations she had with the children, who disclosed that someone named Giannis had hit them.
“While the mother was speaking with the police, I took the children aside. I asked the little girl if her dad hits her. Her face turned serious, and she nodded yes. I asked again, and she gave the same answer. Then I asked if dad hits mommy too, and she nodded again.
I asked her if her dad caused the marks on her arm, and she said yes. When I asked her how, she mimed someone extinguishing a cigarette. At that point, I asked the boy how the injury on his cheek happened, and he answered ‘Giannis.’ That made me wonder whether they meant their biological father or someone else they might see as a father figure.
I later approached the mother again. She seemed more tense and nervous, saying she was dizzy and started limping. I asked her who Giannis is, and she replied that he’s a man from the village who helps them at home.
I asked her again whether someone is hitting the children, if she’s hiding anything, or if she feels guilty. She said no, but her behavior seemed guilty, as though she was hiding something. At one point, I asked the children if they were hungry, and they said yes—loud enough for the mother to hear. Her reaction was completely indifferent. So I decided to buy them something to eat myself.
I should also note that during their entire time in the ER, the children didn’t scratch or show signs of itching, contrary to the mother’s claim that the marks were skin reactions,” the doctor testified.
The 50-year-old man appeared before the magistrate and received an extension to testify today. In his initial statement to police, he denied all accusations.
Authorities Investigating the 32-Year-Old’s Background
At the same time, authorities are trying to untangle the case and determine who ultimately caused the injuries to the children. They are also investigating marker drawings found on the 5-year-old boy’s body.
Police are thoroughly examining the 32-year-old woman’s background to see if she had connections with other individuals.
According to reliable sources, the biological father of the children has also been summoned and is expected to testify before the magistrate this coming Monday. The 32-year-old had filed a report against him on May 10, accusing him of abusing both her and the children.
The 5-year-old boy and 6-year-old girl are still being cared for at the pediatric clinic of the General Hospital of Larissa, receiving both medical attention and psychological support.
The children will remain hospitalized for as long as necessary until the prosecutor decides whether they will be placed with relatives or in a child welfare facility.
