A striking incident occurred this morning at the Acropolis, as 15 individuals were detained after raising the Palestinian flag on the Sacred Rock.
Specifically, the 15 detainees are members of the New Left party and its Youth wing. Photos from the scene show tension between them and the police forces who arrived to remove them. As they were escorted away by the police, the individuals made the victory sign toward the cameras.
The SYRIZA Youth reacted immediately, accusing the government of siding with Israel. “Stop the genocide in Gaza now” and “Free our detained comrades”, read a post by the youth group.
SYRIZA: Release the 15 Members of the New Left Who Were Detained
SYRIZA has demanded the release of those detained, issuing a statement that accused the government of showing its “well-known repressive face.”
SYRIZA’s full statement reads:
“The Mitsotakis government once again revealed its familiar repressive face today by sending the police to detain 15 members of the New Left party and its Youth wing, who unfolded the Palestinian flag on the walls of the Acropolis.”
“This is how the expression of solidarity with the suffering people of Palestine is punished — because it reminds Mr. Mitsotakis of his government’s criminal inaction and bothers the top ministers and ND officials who tour TV studios trying to justify the genocidal attack by the Israeli state on Gaza.”
“We demand the immediate release of all detainees at the Athens Police Headquarters (GADA), and we continue to call on the government to clearly condemn the ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people.”
