Kyranakis to local authorities: “The new road traffic code is a collective commitment to save lives”

What actions are undertaken by municipalities and regions - Ranking of municipalities at the end of 2025 - "We want you allies" writes the Deputy Minister of Transport

Newsroom June 30 10:22

“The new Road Traffic Code (CCC) is more than a legal update — it reflects our shared resolve to reject a status quo that continues to claim lives,” emphasizes Deputy Minister of Transport Constantinos Kyranakis in a letter to all mayors and regional governors across Greece.

Following the recent adoption of the new Road Traffic Code, which prioritizes prevention and improved road safety, Kyranakis calls on local authorities to play an active role in its implementation.

“This is a shared responsibility — an alliance between the state and citizens,” the letter notes, underscoring the pivotal role of Local Government in turning legislation into everyday safety.

Key Measures for Municipal Involvement

Local governments are encouraged to contribute to:

  • Adjusting speed limits based on local needs
  • Ensuring proper placement and maintenance of traffic signs
  • Removing visual obstacles and hazards that distract drivers
  • Creating pedestrian zones and traffic-calming areas
  • Establishing designated parking for Light Personal Electric Vehicles (e.g., e-scooters)

Kyranakis notes that municipalities that actively support these measures will also benefit economically and environmentally, as they will receive a portion of the revenue collected from traffic violations, reinforcing local sustainability efforts.

Performance-Based Ranking for Municipalities

To encourage participation, the Ministry of Transport will publish an end-of-year ranking in 2025, evaluating the progress of municipalities and rewarding top performers. The initiative is intended to boost transparency, accountability, and effective implementation of road safety reforms.

Final Call to Action

Accompanying the letter, the ministry has sent detailed guidance on the key changes to the Road Traffic Code, the updated penalties, and a checklist of actions municipalities can begin implementing immediately.

“In this national effort, we need allies,” the Deputy Minister concludes, urging municipalities to treat the new Road Code not as a bureaucratic obligation, but as a shared mission to protect human life.
