Uncontrolled fire in Lasithi: Homes burned, hotels threatened – Evacuations ordered, people removed by boats

Wildfire rages out of control near Achlia, Crete — Evacuations ordered in five villages

Newsroom July 2 10:29

At this moment, the fire continues to burn without containment. Smoke has engulfed the area, including the beach near Makry Gialos. Several houses have already been burned, and hotels in the region are under threat.

According to SKAI news, many people who were on the beach at the time were evacuated by boats.

A total of 145 firefighters are operating in the area, along with 8 ground teams and 25 fire trucks. Two helicopters are also performing water drops until nightfall.

Deputy Mayor for Civil Protection of Ierapetra, Nektarios Papadakis, told creta24.gr that the fire front is in a critical condition and confirmed that all settlements where residents received the evacuation alert have now been evacuated.

The fire is being fueled by strong winds in the area, making containment efforts more difficult.
