At least 15 people died and 30 others were injured Friday when a bus plunged into a ravine in Peru’s central Andean region of Hunin, according to health authorities.
According to radio station RPP, more than 60 people were on board the bus, which went off the road in a winding area and fell into a cliff about 50 meters deep.
The bus was running from the capital Lima to La Merced, in the Amazon.
Road accidents are common in Peru. The majority of them are attributed to the development of excessive speed, driver inattention, impunity for road code violators, poor condition of parts of the road network, and lack of signage.
According to Peruvian police data, 3,173 lives were lost on the country’s roads in 2024.
