Caretta Caretta turtle nests on Anavyssos beach while Keratea burns

While forests and wildlife were suffering from yet another wildfire, this time in Keratea, a loggerhead sea turtle was laying her eggs on the Alykes beach in Anavyssos

Newsroom August 11 02:33

The images circulating evoke mixed emotions. On one hand, there is the sea turtle choosing this spot for a deeply significant moment — a miracle of nature, as she lays her eggs. On the other hand, in the background, terrifying flames from the Keratea forest are devouring every tree and creature in their path.

Those who were at Alykes beach on Friday night experienced the anxiety of the fire firsthand — breathing smoke and watching a sad rain of ash fall around them. The loggerhead turtle emerged at this very place, reminding those present that life must always prevail.

Locals immediately alerted ARCHELON, the sea turtle protection society, and tried to set up makeshift fences to protect the precious eggs that had come into the world under such harsh conditions, at a time when hope seemed to be fading.

The photos were taken by Ilektra Mentzelopoulou and shared widely, both to celebrate this beautiful and moving moment and to inform the authorities so that the turtle and her eggs could receive proper care.

No matter how much we harm nature, it continuously teaches us important lessons. We must be careful, educate ourselves, and teach others to love nature and avoid putting it in danger.

The nest needs protection and care. In 45 to 70 days, if left undisturbed, the tiny turtles will make their way to the sea.
