French Finance Minister Michel Sapin underlined on Monday that Germany is right to insist that the new Greek government respect the agreements signed by the previous governments, but both sides need to compromise.

Specifically, Sapin told France 2 television: “The Germans are right from their point of view. Greece, not as today’s government, as a country, signed a number of agreements. They must respect those agreements despite the change of government. On their part, the Greeks say, and rightly so, ‘we have a new government, so we are not going to do everything as before,’ and a I support this stance.”

The French FinMin underlined that compromise is the key. “What we have to do is to find a way of functioning together,” he said.
