Russian Bombardment of Kyiv – One of the largest airstrikes since the start of the war

In the capital, drones flew over the city and its outskirts, while anti-aircraft fire could be heard continuously throughout the night

Newsroom September 28 08:44

Since early Sunday morning, Kyiv has been under intense Russian bombardment, in what independent observers described as one of the largest air attacks on the Ukrainian capital since the war began three and a half years ago.

According to Ukrainian media, Russia launched simultaneous strikes on other cities as well, including Zaporizhzhia.

In the capital, drones flew over the city and surrounding areas, while anti-aircraft fire echoed continuously through the night. Many residents were forced to take shelter in underground metro stations, while a red alert was sounded across the entire Ukrainian territory.

So far, according to Agence France-Presse, there are three people injured in Kyiv and four in Zaporizhzhia. The mayor of the Ukrainian capital, Vitali Klitschko, announced that the three injured have been taken to the hospital, while the local governor of Zaporizhzhia, Ivan Fedorov, stated that the city was hit “at least four times.”

The head of the presidential office, Andriy Yermak, spoke of combined drone and missile attacks, emphasizing the escalation of Russian aggression.

The massive Russian attack triggered an immediate response in Poland. Warsaw announced in the early hours that it had closed its airspace near the Ukrainian border, around the cities of Lublin and Rzeszów. The Polish armed forces deployed a fighter aircraft to secure the airspace following Moscow’s raids.

New Threats from Russia

The attack comes just hours after statements by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who warned that anyone attempting to shoot down Russian aircraft inside the country’s airspace “will bitterly regret it.” Lavrov described such an action as a “blatant violation of Russia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty,” signaling rising tensions.
