The Spanish woman who lived to 117: Scientists may have discovered the secret of longevity

Maria Branyas, the oldest woman in the world, had unique genetic markers, good gut health, and a balanced lifestyle that seem to have slowed down the aging process

Newsroom September 28 07:06

Maria Branyas, who passed away last year in Spain at the age of 117, held the title of the world’s oldest woman. Scientists who studied her genome believe that her biological age was much lower than her chronological age, which may explain her remarkable longevity.

Before her death in August 2024, she consented to provide blood, saliva, urine, and stool samples, which were analyzed by Spanish researchers. The goal was to compare her results with those of other people of a similar age.

Genetic Secrets of Longevity

The samples revealed that while Branyas had markers of advanced age, she also displayed strikingly “youthful” characteristics. She had low levels of inflammation, good gut health, and a “young” genetic profile—changes in gene expression without altering the DNA itself.

In addition, she carried rare genetic variations that appeared to protect her from common diseases such as cardiovascular conditions, diabetes, and neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

Researchers described Branyas’s case as “extraordinary”, noting that the findings provide new insights into the biology of aging and suggest potential strategies for extending human lifespan.

The Importance of Lifestyle

Despite the significant role of genetics, experts also studied Branyas’s daily habits. She ate three yogurts a day, maintaining good gut health and a healthy body weight. She followed a mainly Mediterranean diet, had a regular sleep schedule, exercised, maintained good mental health, and actively participated in social life.

Her hobbies—reading, playing the piano, and gardening—rounded out a balanced lifestyle.

The Challenge for Science

Researchers emphasized that Branyas’s case demonstrates that aging and disease are not always interconnected, challenging the common perception that old age inevitably leads to serious health problems.

Their study, published in the scientific journal Cell Reports Medicine, opens new avenues for understanding healthy aging and reinforces the belief that a combination of genetics and lifestyle can help keep people healthy for longer.
