Ekrem Imamoglu is being formally prosecuted for 142 offenses, according to a charge sheet released today by the city prosecutor’s office.

According to Anadolu, Imamoglu, who was arrested in March for “corruption” and whom the judiciary believes was the head of a “criminal organization”, faces a possible prison sentence of up to 2,340 years!

The jailed mayor of Constantinople, a candidate for the main opposition party in the upcoming presidential election, is being prosecuted mainly for fraud, money laundering and facilitating tenders, according to the more than 3,700-page indictment.

Imamoglu, who belongs to the social-democratic Republican People’s Party (CHP), the largest opposition party, denies all charges against him.

A total of 402 suspects accused of setting up a criminal organization are being targeted. Among them are close associates of the Istanbul mayor, who were also arrested on March 19.

The prosecutor general, who has described the network as an “octopus”, said today that it caused 160 billion pounds (3.3 billion euros) in damage to the Turkish state over a ten-year period. It also shared a diagram detailing how the alleged criminal network operates.

Imamoglu’s arrest, which the CHP called a “coup”, led to the biggest wave of controversy in Turkey since 2013.

As part of the same investigation, the prosecutor’s office said today it wants to prosecute the CHP for “violating the constitution”, claiming that its electoral lists were illegally leaked by members of the network that Imamoglu allegedly ran.
