Trump says he has an “obligation” to sue the BBC over his edited speech

In a letter to the British network, the US President makes it clear that they will be asked to pay "at least" 1 billion dollars

U.S. President Donald Trump has ruled that he has an “obligation” to sue the BBC because the British public broadcasting network showed misleadingly edited excerpts of his speech to his supporters on January 6, 2021, before the incidents on the federal capitol.

“Well, I think I have an obligation to do it,” the Republican said during an interview with a Fox News host.

Trump’s letter to the British network makes it clear that they will be asked to pay “at least” $1 billion.

At the same time, the BBC is in disarray after the resignations of its director general, Tim Davey, and head of news Deborah Turness, amid the biased editing of last year’s documentary “Trump: A Second Chance“. The BBC has admitted that filmmakers combined clips from different parts of Trump’s speech before the crowd stormed Capitol Hill on January 6, 2021, to make it appear that he was directly urging violence.

BBC chairman Samir Shah apologized Monday for editing the video, but dismissed claims of “systemic” bias in the broadcaster’s reporting.

Trump sued CBS’s parent company over an edit of Kamala Harris’s interview on “60 Minutes,” resulting in a settlement reached this summer. Paramount Global has decided to pay Trump $16 million to settle a lawsuit over the editing.
