Bloomberg: Merkel will tell Tsipras that rules are meant to be followed

“Any suggestion that she will deliver an ultimatum to Tsipras is complete nonsense”, says German official to Bloomberg

Newsroom March 18 11:41

German Chancellor Angela Merkel will reportedly tell Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras that eurozone rules are “meant to be followed, according to a report by Bloomberg, which cited German sources.

Tsipras will travel to Berlin to meet with Merkel amid increasingly strained relations between Athens and eurozone creditors.

According to the same source, who asked not to be identified, the German Chancellor is willing to go a long way to find a compromise, and intends to tell Tsipras during meetings in Brussels and Berlin over the next five days that she expects Greece to play by the rules.

Furthermore, according to the same German official, following the intense few last weeks, Merkel is now pursuing an effort to get the discussion back on track.

Merkel sees the meetings with Tsipras as more of a chance to get to know him, and doesn’t plan to directly negotiate details of Greece’s fate, which she sees as a matter between Athens and its creditors, the official said.
