Serious disruptions to the power supply have been reported since Friday afternoon (5/12) in several areas of the Municipality of Sparta, causing major inconvenience to residents and businesses as the “Byron” storm system continues to impact Laconia.

According to lakonikos.gr, the outage—which began around 1 p.m.—has affected large parts of the city as well as several communities in the Oinountas municipal unit, including Voutianoi, Sellasia, Karyes, and other nearby settlements.

Initial reports suggest a major technical failure in the HEDNO (DEDDIE) power grid, which has not yet been fully repaired. Technical crews have been on-site since early on, attempting to locate and isolate the source of the problem. However, the situation remains unstable, with repeated restorations followed by new outages, continuing to trouble households and local businesses.

Fire Service Rescues People Stuck in Elevators

The ongoing instability in the power network has caused a chain reaction of incidents. The Sparta Fire Service has been called to respond to at least four or five cases of people trapped in elevators during the outages. Fortunately, all individuals were safely rescued without injuries.
