Farmers sharpen their stance: Clashes outside Heraklion Airport, nationwide highway blockades, and preparations for port shutdowns (updated)

Farmers have also blocked bypass routes along the national highways – Map of roadblocks across Greece – Gathering outside Minister Tsiaras’ office in Karditsa

Newsroom December 8 01:35

Farmers continue to reinforce road blockades across Greece, with new protests erupting in Crete on Monday, leading to clashes. Both entrances of Heraklion Airport were shut down as farmers arrived with tractors, while similar tensions escalated in Chania.

In Chania, farmers overturned a police vehicle and damaged a police van during stone-throwing clashes. Police used tear gas to push back attempts to break through roadblocks leading to the airports in both Heraklion and Chania. Traffic toward Heraklion Airport was effectively halted as farm vehicles blocked the BOAK highway.

In Chania, farmers tried to blockade the I. Daskalogiannis Airport, but police blocked access routes. Negotiations failed, and when their request for a peaceful three-hour blockade was denied, protesters attempted to break the police line, triggering further confrontations and tear gas.

Farmers across Greece continue to reinforce the dozens of roadblocks they have set up nationwide, while new mobilizations began today in Crete, where clashes broke out at midday on Monday. Heraklion’s “Nikos Kazantzakis” Airport has been closed from both entrances, as farmers arrived with tractors and other vehicles for a large agricultural demonstration.

On Senetaki Street, police had set up a barricade, while farmers insisted they would reach the airport “one way or another” to block access. When farmers attempted to break through the police line, officers responded with tear gas, leading to tense confrontations. Traffic has also been disrupted on Ikarou Avenue.

“The situation is tragic. They have wiped out the production sector. If we have to stay out on the roads until New Year’s, we will. The people will have the final word. Our struggle is just,” said Lefteris Triantafyllakis, President of the Heraklion Livestock Breeders’ Association. Farmers from Lasithi and Rethymno have also joined the protests.

Blocked bypasses, roads, ports, and border crossings

Farmers are also blocking bypass routes along national highways and carrying out short-term closures that completely halt traffic. In northern Greece, border posts remain blocked.

Plans are underway for coordinated port blockades—starting Wednesday in Volos both from land and sea—while similar action is expected in Thessaloniki in the coming days.

“At this point, consider the port already blocked,” said Vasilis Mavroskas, a farmer from Epanomi at the “Prasina Fanaria” blockade near Thessaloniki Airport. “These things don’t happen overnight, but the blockade is essentially already in place.”

Government officials at Maximos Mansion, the Deputy Prime Minister’s office, and the Ministry of Rural Development are still waiting for the farmers to indicate how they want to be represented in any potential dialogue. So far, no such proposal has been made.

Tensions in Karditsa

Around noon, some 25 tractors and hundreds of farmers arrived in Karditsa aiming to block access to Minister of Rural Development Kostas Tsiaras’ office. They were met by riot police buses, leading to heated exchanges.

Thessaly

The national highway at Nikaia remains closed, with tractors lined up and farmers declaring they won’t retreat without substantial answers to their demands. Today from 5–7 p.m., access roads around the Nikaia blockade are closing as part of the pressure campaign.

A unified action is planned for Wednesday, when farmers from the three major Thessaly blockades will join forces with local fishermen and block the port of Volos. On Thursday, farmers in Larissa are calling for a mass regional gathering at the Nikaia blockade.

Blockades also remain strong in Karditsa on the E65 motorway and in Trikala at the Longos tolls, with reinforcements arriving daily.

Central Greece

After last night’s assembly at the Bralos blockade, farmers decided to close all side roads until 13:00 today, with additional closures throughout the day. This affects travel between Athens and Lamia.

Atalanti, Kastro, Thiva, and Domokos blockades are also intensifying their actions, with periodic shutdowns of the old national road and the E65 access routes.

Peloponnese

In Achaia, farmers have blocked the new Patras–Pyrgos highway. In Aigio, a daily short-term shutdown continues on the Patras–Corinth motorway. Similar actions take place in Ilia, where farmers block the Patras–Pyrgos route near Pyrgos junction.

Northern Greece – “Prasina Fanaria”, Derveni, Malgara, Chalkidona

Farmers in Thessaloniki and Halkidiki remain at “Prasina Fanaria,” insisting the road is blocked by police, not them, since their tractors are parked to the side.

“We continue because we have a government without empathy,” said Mavroskas. “We want a comprehensive plan for Greek agriculture—one that even the opposition will commit to. We demand action against cartels in supplies and product markets, and punishment for those involved in scandals like the OPEKEPE case.”

At 3 p.m., coordinating committees from various blockades will meet in Trilofos to decide next steps.

Short-term blockades also continue at Derveni, Malgara tolls, and the Chalkidona junction.

Imathia, Pella, Pieria

Blockades continue on the Egnatia near Nisi, at Kouloura, Gypsokhori, and across several Pella locations including Vegoritida and Kaimaktsalan. Skydra producers may block the border crossing again today.

In Pieria, farmers at Aiginio are carrying out symbolic closures of the old Thessaloniki–Katerini highway.

Western Macedonia

Long-duration blockades are underway at Filotas, Siatista, Kerdyllia, and near the Bulgarian border at Prosotsani and Kokkinochori junctions. Farmers also plan to blockade the ELGA regional offices.

Western Greece

In Aetolia-Acarnania, farmers have blocked the Antirrio–Ioannina motorway at Angelokastro tolls and may open the Rio–Antirrio Bridge tolls on Wednesday. Similar actions occur at the Mornos and Evinos bridges.

Epirus

In Arta, farmers closed the Peta junction on the Ionian Motorway. In Ioannina, after blocking the local airport, farmers returned to Kallpaki, where a week-old blockade remains. Additional protests continue in Preveza and Igoumenitsa, where a tractor march to the port is planned for Thursday.

Crete – Plans for port and airport shutdowns

At 11:30 a.m., farmers in Crete began their mobilization near Pankritio Stadium, followed by a large motorcade toward Heraklion. The Pan-Cretan Coordinating Committee aims to blockade both Heraklion Port and “N. Kazantzakis” Airport. Farmers from Sitia, Ierapetra, Agios Nikolaos, and eastern Rethymno have joined the demonstration.
