Katechaki–Evangelismos nears completion

It is one of the largest public infrastructure projects in the country’s modern history, not only in terms of technical complexity but also in the scale of its impact on the operation and everyday life of the capital

Newsroom December 16 04:53

AVAX Group has now reached a critical stage in the construction works for Athens Metro Line 4, with progress on the Katechaki–Evangelismos tunnel exceeding 90% of the total route.

This major underground engineering achievement is being driven by the tunnel boring machine known as “Athena,” a state-of-the-art machine approximately 100 metres long. Excavation began from the Katechaki shaft, with the machine advancing toward Evangelismos station, passing beneath areas such as Ilissia, Zografou and the University Campus. The TBM’s cutter head is expected to emerge very soon at the Evangelismos shaft, marking the completion of this section of the underground route.

At the same time, work is also progressing from the opposite end with a second tunnel boring machine, “Niki.” This TBM began excavation from the Veikou station shaft and has already constructed more than 2.6 kilometres of underground tunnel, covering around 37% of its route toward the same final destination at Evangelismos. Protecting residential areas and ensuring safe passage beneath densely populated urban zones present major challenges, but progress so far indicates that the technical plan remains on schedule.

The Line 4 project, which includes approximately 12.8 kilometres of underground track and 15 stations, represents one of the most complex expansions of the Athens Metro network. The new line is designed to serve densely populated neighborhoods and key urban hubs, easing road congestion and supporting sustainable mobility in the capital.
