Parliamentary Speaker Zoe Konstantopoulou called the Investigating Committee on Debt as one “for the truth and accountability to the Greek people and to society” in her opening speech during the procedure for the establishment of the committee at noon on Saturday.
The debate focusing on Greek debt creation was initiated by Konstantopoulou to explore the process that led to its creation to examine how the Greek economy has got to the state it is currently in, with the disintegration of social welfare, education and human rights. She said that the debt was the result of “oversights, loan agreements with extremely high interest rates, corrupt contracts that made the debt explode and can be seen through a series of files sent to Parliament or to Justice.”
“The debt is not indisputable for as long as it has not passed through audit control that questions what percentage or part of it is legal and which part is illegal, burdensome and shameful,” she said.

Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos noted “Greece has commitments that derive from its participation in the eurozone and the fiscal targets we have undertaken but it also has rights that derive from the national sovereignty that has not been granted to the European institutions. Among them, is the right to control the condition under which the debt has been created, not only to find the truth but to prevent such phaenomena in the future”.

“The work of the (investigating) committee will contribute as to to learn what happened with debt and how European nations should proceed,” he said.

Panagiotis Nikoloudis, State Corruption Minister, said that “corruption without a doubt is one of the main reason’s of the country’s state.”

During the debate anti-austerity right-wing leader Panos Kammenos said that he was disappointed that many of those who led the country on the path of debt were not present in Parliament to discuss the problems caused by their action.

In a statement made by To Potami, Konstantopoulou was attacked for not inviting the party and its leader Stavros Theodorakis in the event for the establishment of the Investigating Committee for debt. “Konstantopoulou continues to consider parliament her domain and did not invite To Potami and other opposition parties. The event was labeled a joint SYRIZA-ANEL exclusive event.

Addressing Parliament, Varoufakis said that the committee should shed light on the procedures through which the debt of the European countries has swollen, a result of the way in which the eurozone’s architecture is designed and he also pointed to the financial system “which, however, has been found legal from Eurostat and from the European Commission.”

He expressed skepticism concerning the investigating committees in order to cover “the political and judicial system’s failure. Though he positively views transparency he pointed to “tension in Greece due to failure of the political and legal system to be sent to examining committees in parliament.”
