US Ambassador begins tours across Greece: From Zappeion to Washington, the vertical corridor

Energy and infrastructure: Focus on the vertical corridor

Georgia Sadana February 7 09:44

After a period of adjustment and institutional contacts in Athens, Ambassador Guilfoyle has prioritized Alexandroupoli and Thessaloniki for her initial visits. Her focus includes the LNG terminal in Revythousa and the FSRU unit in Alexandroupoli, which facilitate U.S. natural gas exports to Europe. She aims to gain a comprehensive understanding of various regions, academic activities, production capabilities, and Greek culture, which was part of her academic studies.

Guilfoyle is actively involved in advancing the U.S. energy agenda in Southeast Europe, with ongoing discussions about expanding the LNG station network in Greece. She is also preparing for the February 24 meeting in Washington, which will include regulators, network managers, private sector companies, and, for the first time, a representative from the European Commission alongside Greek Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou and his counterparts.

Sources familiar with the matter suggest that Guilfoyle’s promotion of the White House agenda and her close relationship with Trump indicate his visit to Athens is forthcoming. She confirmed, “I know that President Trump will come to Greece,” during a screening of the documentary “Melania.”

The U.S. State Department is preparing for the next round of the Greece-U.S. Strategic Dialogue, which may be marked by Rubio’s visit to Athens. Trump’s visit could coincide with the NATO Summit in Turkey on July 7-8, or follow a potential trip to Gaza as part of his “Council of Peace” initiative.

Guilfoyle’s tours and diplomatic efforts underscore the deepening Greece-U.S. partnership, especially in energy and regional security.
