Severe Weather to Sweep Greece Today

Athens—Friday, February 20, 2026

Greece braces for a short but intense bout of severe weather today, as the National Meteorological Service (EMY) issues an extraordinary bulletin warning of heavy rain, thunderstorms, hail, and gale-force winds across the country.

Athens in the Storm’s Path

Meteorologist Theodoros Kolydas forecasts that Athens and Attica will experience afternoon showers and thunderstorms, with the cold front expected to reach the capital after 7 p.m. Kolydas shared hourly weather developments on social media, noting that the front is already impacting western Greece.

EMY Issues Crimson Alert

The severe weather warning, issued Thursday at noon, predicts heavy showers, thunderstorms, and possible hail from early Friday until Saturday afternoon. The storm will first hit northwestern Greece before spreading to western regions, northeastern mainland, and the eastern Aegean.

Key Areas and Timings

  • Friday:
    • Early hours to early afternoon: Northern Ionian Sea (Corfu, Diapontian Islands, Paxos) and Epirus
    • Early morning to afternoon: Remaining Ionian Sea and western Central Greece
    • Mid-morning to late afternoon: Western and southern Peloponnese
    • Late afternoon: Eastern Macedonia and Thrace
    • Early evening to late night: Rest of Peloponnese, eastern Sterea (including Attica), Evia, and northeastern Aegean islands
  • Saturday:
    • Until afternoon: Eastern Macedonia, Thrace, and northeastern Aegean islands
    • Until noon: Eastern Aegean islands and Dodecanese

Strong Winds Expected

Southerly winds of 7 to locally 8 Beaufort will sweep across the Ionian Sea and gradually the central and northern Aegean on Friday.
