Dukas criticizes PASOK’s expansion referring to the process as chaotic

Athens Mayor Haris Doukas has sharply criticized the process of expanding the ranks of PASOK, describing it as chaotic. He specifically referred to the recent announcement of Peleginis as an example

Newsroom March 10 12:12

Dukas stressed the need for clear rules, principles, and values when incorporating new members to ensure that each addition contributes meaningfully. He opposed the return of individuals who had previously criticized PASOK, as well as the inclusion of “political wanderers” who have switched between multiple parties.

Regarding discussions with anyone who supports progressive governance, he said that such dialogue is natural and reflects the shared position of socialists. Dukas also announced that he will push at the party congress for a decision against coalition government with New Democracy, aiming to strengthen PASOK’s position.

Speaking on SKAI, Dukas commented:

“There must be rules, principles, and values so that we are certain every addition contributes. These rules currently don’t exist, which is critical in these processes. To be fair, there are people with a long history, but it cannot look like we’re taking members from a sack. The expansion is indiscriminate as it stands.”

Asked which rules he meant, Dukas said:

“We have a value framework. People who insulted PASOK cannot simply return. We cannot welcome wanderers who have gone through all other parties. People who fought hard for the party see these individuals being added to a list at the congress without a vote.”

He acknowledged that some announced members do have significant value but argued that lumping them together with others undermines that value.

Responding to criticism over his statement about engaging with everyone who believes in progressive governance—including Alexis Tsipras—Dukas said:

“We reached the point where we announce Peleginis. I never said we should announce Tsipras at the congress; I said the opposite. Dialogue is necessary with anyone who talks about progressive governance. In the PES, socialists work together with the left and ecology. I spoke of discussion and dialogue as a catalyst for progressive governance centered on PASOK.”

Dukas emphasized the importance of a clear stance, particularly regarding coalition with New Democracy:

“To move forward, we need a clear directive. I said something obvious about Sánchez, and both Androulakis and Diamantopoulou said the same. I’ve faced attacks for saying no to New Democracy. I will not tire; I will put this decision to the congress. Why not decide this now?”

He added that political change requires PASOK to rise to first place, and the party must make the right decisions at the upcoming congress.
