Deadly storm Erminio hits Attica: Flooded homes and massive road damage

See images and videos from Rafina, Dionysos, and other areas that received heavy rainfall – with the first light of day revealing the damage left behind by the storm – mud and water everywhere, and dozens of calls to the Fire Department for water pumping

Newsroom April 2 11:17

Severe weather from Storm Erminio has wreaked havoc across Attica, leaving one dead and causing widespread flooding and property damage. Heavy rainfall overnight turned streets into rivers and triggered landslides, particularly affecting the areas of Nea Makri, Marathonos, Rafina, Dionysos, and Vouliağmeni.

Tragic Casualty and Property Damage

A 50-year-old Polish man tragically lost his life in Nea Makri after being swept away by rushing floodwaters. In the same area, Roumeli Street was buried under tons of stones and debris, while municipal teams and the Fire Department worked tirelessly to pump water from flooded homes.

Near Marathonos, a stream breached the road, creating a massive hole and damaging the water supply pipeline, leaving nearby neighborhoods without water. Authorities have closed the road until repairs are completed.

Widespread Flooding

Rafina also suffered severe flooding, while Dionysos and Vouliağmeni experienced uprooted trees and blocked roads due to high winds. Fire Department reports indicate 483 emergency calls across Attica, including 168 for water pumping, 191 for tree removal, and 33 for rescuing stranded individuals.

Authorities Warn Residents

The Marathon Municipality issued a statement urging residents to avoid non-essential travel until Storm Erminio passes, warning that the storm is still ongoing and may cause further hazards.

First Light Reveals Full Extent

At dawn, the scale of the damage became evident. Mud, debris, and water covered streets, and local authorities continue to work on clearing roads and restoring basic services. Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and follow official safety instructions.

Storm Erminio serves as a stark reminder of the destructive potential of severe weather, highlighting the importance of preparedness and community response during extreme conditions.
