Video shows last images of little Ani before her murder

She can't believe that her son, a boy who once gathered strays, could have killed his own child

Newsroom May 12 12:43

Video footage surfaced on Tuesday showing what is believed to be the last images of little Ani, the four-year-old girl whose father reportedly killed, cut, boiled and disposed of her body parts in the trash.

Ani’s fate has thoroughly shocked Greece since the story first emerged late last month, following a nationwide alert to initially locate the missing Bulgarian girl. The case later warped into a brutal homicide and with her father arrested as the confessed murderer.

Meanwhile, the child’s grandmother on Tuesday stated that “I still have hope that something else happened.”

“I’m a mother,” she says refering to her son Savvas Bakartzief who is currently held in prison for infanticide. She also holds Ani’s mother, Dimitrina Borisova, accountable for the heinous crime. “Whatever happened, she knew!”

“I did not talk with my son today. All I said when I saw him is that I am here and ‘I love you’,” she says, adding that she doesn’t believe that her son could have committed the crime. “When he was little he would gather all the strays home. I still hope. It’s something else. I can believe anything else. Perhaps that he sold it, but not that he killed the child.”

She revealed that on Monday, Ani’s mother had telephoned her seeking help so that she could leave prison and help Savvas. “She told me to testify that she had asked me to keep the child. I don’t have her telephone number or any other contact!”
