Magyar won the elections in Hungary, Orban lost after 16 years

His party secured 136 seats compared to Orban’s 56, out of a total of 199 seats - “I congratulate the winner,” said the outgoing prime minister, while the opposition reported allegations of electoral fraud

A historic day for Hungary, as Peter Magyar unseated Viktor Orban after 16 years in power.

The opposition leader won more than 47% of the vote, securing 136 seats out of 199, and in a Facebook post stated that Orban had called him to congratulate him on his victory.

Meanwhile, Orban’s Fidesz party secured 56 seats, according to data from Europe Elects.

“The election results are not yet final, but they are understandable and clear. The result is painful for us, but clear. We were not given the responsibility and the opportunity to govern. I congratulate the winner,” Orban said in a speech to Fidesz voters.

Shortly after the end of the voting process, Magyar stated that his faction had received several complaints about fraud and attempts to influence the outcome, which, he said, would be investigated and, if necessary, pursued legally.

“Anyone who committed or instigated electoral fraud will be held accountable before the law,” he said.
