The long-ago scheduled meeting between German FinMin Wolfgang Schaeuble and Yannis Stournaras took place in good spirit a few hours after the latter was announced to be placed in the position of Governor of the Bank of Greece.
According to tv reports, Yannis Stournaras conveyed a message of continue towards the German Finance Ministry, two days after the recent government reshuffle.
“We will preserve Thermopylae”, stated Mr. Stournaras characteristically, with a slightly unfortunate historical parallel, noting that there will be improvements henceforth. Continuing in the same pattern, he carried the message that the Prime Minister has put forth that steps taken by Greece with sacrifices of the people will be preserved, the country will keep moving in the same direction to avoid losing all that has been gained, and that reform will continue.
On his part, Wolfgang Schaeuble assured him that Germany will support Greece’s course in the future, recognizing the successes of the country, which he noted “Exceeded expectations”. At the same time the German FinMin appeared certain that the reshuffle will not change the course of Greek politics.
