The iconic figure of Greek theatre has passed away

Newsroom April 22 02:53

The actor died a few days ago at his home, with his beloved wife—also an actress—Elli Fotiou by his side. His funeral was scheduled for today, Wednesday, April 22, in a close family circle.

Stefanos Linaeos was a Greek actor, writer, director, and theatre entrepreneur. He was also involved in politics, as a member of PASOK and a Member of Parliament for Athens A from 1989 to 1990.

He graduated from the Athens Drama School in 1951 and, in 1969, from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London. Between 1954 and 1967, he collaborated with more than 20 theatre companies in 100 plays, while also appearing in 100 films, as well as in radio and television productions. From 1970 onward, he directed and participated in 50 theatrical productions and numerous radio and TV programs.

He served as General Secretary of the Greek Actors’ Association from 1966 to 1967, when he was dismissed by the military junta due to his political beliefs. He was also an advisor to the Panhellenic Union of Free Theatre (PEETH) from 1975 and to the Hellenic Theatre Centre from 1977. Additionally, he was a member of the British Actors’ Union.

He was married to actress Elli Fotiou, with whom he had two children: Margarita (born 1968), who for many years was director of the Second Programme of Greek Radio, and Alexis (born 1970).
