At least 20 people have been killed in attacks attributed to the jihadist group Boko Haram in northeastern Nigeria, the Reuters news agency reported, citing local officials.
Gunmen on motorcycles raided the villages of Pumbagu and Mayo Landé, according to regional official Manda Saidu. He said that 11 people were killed in Pumbagu and nine in Mayo Landé, adding that the attackers burned homes and shops and stole food supplies.
Northeastern Nigeria has faced a jihadist insurgency since 2009, with Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP)—a splinter faction that broke away from Boko Haram—carrying out widespread violence. The conflict has killed thousands, displaced hundreds of thousands, and triggered a severe humanitarian crisis in the region.
