Greece is following in stunned silence the developments surrounding the case of the two 17-year-old students who jumped from the 6th floor of an apartment building in Ilioupoli, leaving one dead and the other fighting for her life. Their teacher describes them as very good girls and says that just the previous afternoon they had all been together joking around.

At the girls’ school, grief and shock dominate the atmosphere. Psychologists and social workers have been brought in to support classmates, who are leaving white flowers on the desk of the 17-year-old girl who lost her life.

“We are devastated. It couldn’t be more shocking. We have already contacted all the authorities and secondary education officials. The ministry has been informed, and we have taken all the necessary actions. Because we also need to consider what we should not do — not only what we will do. This whole process is about managing the incident and managing the grief within the school,” their teacher told MEGA.

“Wonderful girls, until yesterday afternoon we were together”

The girls’ teacher, deeply shaken himself by the tragic loss and by the battle his second student is fighting for her life, says there was absolutely no indication of what would follow. Two wonderful young girls, excellent students, loved by everyone at the school.

“Very good girls. Extremely good girls. And until yesterday afternoon we were together. I was joking with them, talking to them, advising them. I had taken them on a school trip to Crete. I was the one accompanying them.”

Speaking about the girl who died, he said:

“At school she was a very calm and gentle presence in terms of her behavior. She smiled when she spoke to you. She was extremely polite. She participated when you asked her to.”

“I had no indication — otherwise we would have intervened immediately”

Asked whether there had been any signs or anything unusual in their behavior, the teacher replied:

“I’ve been at this same school for 40 years. I know this school better than my own home. I had nothing. Otherwise we would have intervened immediately. They were in the same class. They were friends. They talked together. The day before yesterday I taught them — except for the last period — and they were laughing with each other. They were making jokes,” he initially said, adding:

“They were also friends with other kids. And when you encouraged them, they participated. I’m telling you, yesterday we were together joking around. I teased them, made jokes with them. There was absolutely nothing suggesting what they had in mind. The girls were smiling. It’s insane. I simply cannot comprehend it.”

It is noted that the Municipality of Ilioupoli declared three days of mourning following the tragic incident.

“The mayor declares three days of municipal mourning from today, Wednesday, May 13, 2026, until Friday, May 15, 2026, expressing the deep sorrow of the municipal authority and the local community as the smallest sign of honor, respect, and solidarity for the untimely death of our 17-year-old fellow citizen,” the statement said.

During the mourning period:

  • Flags at municipal buildings and facilities will fly at half-mast.
  • All celebratory, cultural, and entertainment events organized by the municipality are postponed.
  • Municipal services are asked to observe one minute of silence.
