Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis participated today in the informal meeting of EU foreign ministers in Limassol, where, having now received the experts’ report regarding the drone discovered in Lefkada, he briefed EU High Representative Kaja Kallas.
He also discussed the issue with his Ukrainian counterpart, Andrii Sybiha, who had been invited to Limassol by the Cypriot Presidency.
According to reports, given that the drone is of Ukrainian manufacture, the necessary diplomatic steps are expected to follow, including a formal démarche to the Ukrainian government in the coming days.
What the report by the Hellenic National Defense General Staff and the National Intelligence Service says
According to information from the report compiled by the Hellenic National Defense General Staff and the National Intelligence Service, the sea drone lost its course due to a technical problem in its navigation systems.
The investigation includes a detailed description of its technical characteristics. However, it does not determine the drone’s exact point of origin or intended target. It also appears that it had not traveled a long distance, as a significant quantity of fuel remained in its tanks.
The technical analysis does not make it entirely clear that Ukraine was behind the drone, despite the fact that Defense Minister Nikos Dendias publicly identified the sea drone as Ukrainian.
